The Clean Energy Revolution

52 min
Watch episode

There is an energy revolution in progress. In Portugal, the sun and the wind already guarantee several consecutive days of electricity in the 100% renewable network. Today, the country already invests more in renewable energy than in oil and coal. Can we ever live without fossil fuels?

The world, and Europe in particular, is rethinking how energy is used: climate change and biodiversity loss must be slowed down, while ensuring that green energy reaches everybody. It is a transformation that promises to create more jobs, but can we do this without leaving anybody behind?

With analysis from a number of experts and the views of citizens, this new FFMS documentary analyses the developments in the energy transition in Portugal and the opportunities and the challenges of this approach.

There is almost one car for every two Portuguese and 96% of these vehicles still run on diesel or petrol. At the same time, 75% of Portuguese buildings are inefficient and consume 33% of the country’s energy.

Portugal’s aim is to reach 85% renewable electricity by 2030 and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Do we have the resources and public policies to achieve this? Are we prepared to make changes in the homes we live in and in the way we travel?

Transport and buildings are the two most critical sectors in the energy transition and have significant impacts on greenhouse gas emissions.

This new FFMS documentary, narrated by journalist Carlos Daniel, is a co-production with RTP.
